We will be staying with friends in Fife for 2 nights the day before attend the Ryder Cup. We'll have a rental car, so what would be your suggestion for a day of exploration? My husband would love to see Saint Andrews, but what else would make a good round trip day of sightseeing. Will incorporating Stirling into the plan be too much driving the opposite direction? We'd plan to be back at our friend's for dinner.
I think St Andrews and Stirling are way too much in one day. St Andrews and a drive too Crail then a walk along the Five Coastal Trail could be lovely.
If you are into Arctic or Antarctic exploration there is Dundee and you get to cross the modern road equivalent of the bridge that inspired one of the 'best' poems in the English language, Also over the Tay are Glamis, Arbroath, Montrose.
Stirling Castle is fantastic. St Andrew's is - OK. IMHO
You can have a great time just in the Kingdom of Fife.
First, there is the villages on the East Coast. This is a series of very picturesque fishing villages.
Second, check out Falkland Palace. I visited it a few years ago. It's Stuart palace in a small town. There is a very old tennis court back in the gardens.
And here's a wonderful website on Fife. It looks like half my favorite Scottish writers were born there. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the idea of just driving along the coast and stopping along the way.
