Need help with October itinerary

My husband, niece and I are going to Scotland for 10 days in October. We fly into Edinburgh Thursday and spend the weekend with UK friends in the city. We definitely want to go to Islay, do some hiking in the Highlands and maybe Eilean Donan castle? is this too spread out. I don't want to do a series of one nighters - a good base?
Thanks for any help or insights.

Are you planning to rent a car? That makes for a lot of driving in the short amount of time you have.

I believe that Loganair flies from Glasgow to Islay, which would be a good option. Just take the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow, and the the Airport Bus 500 from the trains station to the airport. After your stay on Islay, you can rent a car and drive to the Highlands and find a base there, like Glencoe or Ft. William.

yes, renting a car. i feel like we're more interested to do the west coast after the city. Nature, hiking and quaint villages.
