We're arriving at EDI around 6pm in October. We plan to rent a car and drive up to visit friends north of Dundee. We don't really want to deal with driving on the left in an unfamiliar place in the dark. So, we'd like to find a nice hotel about a half our north of the airport - perhaps Perth?
My mother is in her late 80's so reasonable accessibility is a must (walking is okay, more than a flight of stairs not so much).

Since we're flying in (and we all know how that can go) do we need to make reservations for a Monday night in mid-october, or should we be able to use our smart phones and find something when we know our timing?

Perth is a bit further north than a half hour--its closer to an hour. What about staying in Dunfermline? It's just over the bridge in Fife. It will get you away from the airport and the drive to Dundee will be easy the next day. I think that there is a Premier Inn not far off the road north. They offer a good place to rest after a transatlantic flight.
