I will be traveling to Scotland in May and I have interest in hearing traditional music in the evenings, Can anyone share some of their favorite towns and venues for this pastime?
Thank you.
This recent thread I asked has some good ideas: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/scotland/scottish-music-tour-guide-in-glasgow-or-edinburgh May 2-12, 2025, is the Tradfest in Edinburgh. May 2-4, 2025, is the Girvan Traditional Folk Festival near Ayr.
Check the Churches. We sat in on an organ rehearsal at the Holy Rude Church in Stirling. It is a famous organ. They have CDs available. It is on the road that goes up the hill from town below the Castle. I believe Rick Steves wrote about playing this one.
You can find 'trad' music all over Scotland, so it would probably help to know whereabouts in Scotland you will be visiting.
I second the organ recital thing. I did this once in Edinburgh, just noting the "7 O'clock start" on a sign in front of the church. It was one of my best memories of my first UK trip. I guess it depends on what tradition you are looking for!
