Morvern area of Highlands

I want to drive from Gruline on Mull to Mallaig to take the ferry to Skye. Instead of taking the ferry to Oban and driving the main roads to Ft. William and then heading west, Google Maps is prompting me to take the Fishnish-Lochaline ferry and then drive up through the area called Morvern. It looks pretty remote, with mainly single track roads, and not many villages. Has anyone driven through this area and can tell me what it is like? Thanks very much.

I have driven that route and remember it being much as you describe. Google street view images might help you as well.

There were four of us in the car when I did my journey (a few years ago) and so we didn't feel vulnerable had the car developed a puncture or some other problem, if that's what concerns you? Would you be undertaking this journey alone?

As I recall the ferry was not one which you could book ahead. You just turned up and waited and drove on when instructed to do so. We didn't wait long, maybe 20 minutes. Some of that time was spent watching the ferry do the crossing towards us.

What time of year will you be there? Personally I'd feel more confident doing it in summer, not just because the days are longer but also because ambient temperatures are likely to be mild. Just in case something goes wrong.

It is single track, it is remote. But is not that remote and is also one of the routes from the Ft William area to Mull. As others have said, streetview will give you an idea of what to expect.

Thanks for your responses. Looking at Google street view is a good idea. We will be there in May, and I have a traveling companion, so my main concern is not vulnerability but being stranded by a car breakdown on an untraveled road with poor cell phone service. Also, I was concerned about whether the road was so rough that there was the possibility of damage to my rental car. But it sounds from your responses that neither of these concerns is significant.

I think that this is great idea. I drove in some parts of it a number of years ago. My advice is to make sure you have full tank of gas. :)
