More ferry questions

I am trying to book a ferry on June 2 for two people and a car from Mallaig to Armdale. However, even before I input a date it won’t et me add my car. Not sure why. That is on the Calmac website, but if I try on a different website it will let me. Any suggestions? Thanks all.

I guess it is only running as a foot passenger until June 16?

Is the “best” way to get there based on ferry issues? This is chat gpt

🚗 Option 1: Driving via Fishnish–Lochaline Ferry and Skye Bridge
Route Overview:

Drive from your location in Mull to Fishnish Ferry Terminal.
Take the ferry from Fishnish to Lochaline on the mainland.
Drive through Fort William and Kyle of Lochalsh.
Cross the Skye Bridge to reach the Isle of Skye.
Continue driving to Broadford

How are you adding the car?

What you need to do is plug in your destination and dates, then first add your passengers, then add a car.

Make sure you check NO on the "towing" and "bike rack" boxes, then go down to the very bottom and check the box that says you do not know the details of the car you will be driving. It should let you proceed after that.

I did that but it would not let me do it. I think the ferry might only be taking foot passengers? Thanks for replying and I know you have lots of knowledge.:)

That can't be it because I was able to enter my information just now and get to the point where I could book it.

Do you have an account set up or are you going in as a guest? Another option might be to change browsers. Sometimes Chrome gets wonky on me and I switch to Firefox or Safari and it will work. Something worth trying.

Last thought; if you can't make it work, it's not that much longer to take the bridge over—maybe 20-30 minutes. So that's always a possibility. But given that I was able to make it work, it must be something from your end that is glitching it up. Another thought would be to use a different computer (or browser, as I mentioned). You could also try contacting Calmac.

It is also working literally now for me to do a dummy booking for 2 pax and 1 vehicle, with availability on all sailings that day. I'm doing it as a guest on tablet on highly volatile train wifi.

I used my phone and it worked! Thanks for that ;) If we are coming from Mull and have all day to get to Broadford what time would you suggest getting the ferry? The 3 or 5 pm? We have 5 nights on Skye and 3 nights on Mull so have luxury of time :)

Thanks for answering so quickly, much appreciated

The 3 pm then you have time to turn tail for the bridge but still arrive at a decent time if there are any ferry issues on the day.

You're welcome, Nicola.

I'm assuming you're taking the Kilchoan ferry to Mallaig since it's a shorter drive? If so, here is something you might want to know.

Ferry terminals have numbered spaces for cars to get in, and that’s how they know the order they will proceed onto the ferry. For example, number one goes first, and so on. If you are taking the Kilchoan ferry, which is a VERY small ferry terminal right at the end of the dock in Tobermory, I would suggest taking your car down there early, parking in the lowest number you can park in, then just lock it up and go have breakfast someplace. :-) When I was there, I got up around 6-ish am (I wanted to be on the first ferry of the day), and I managed to park in the number one slot. Since it is a show up and go ferry, it’s better to be at the head of the line to make sure there is space for you – especially if you have a car.

After locking it up, I walked back to the guest house, had breakfast, paid my bill, and walked back to the ferry. By this point, a crowd was starting to gather. When I walked up to my car so i could put my small backpack in it, a woman came up to me and asked me what I had to do to get that spot. I told her that you had to be there at 6 am. She laughed and said she wanted to be here then, but her husband refused to get up that early.

Anyway, you may not need to be there that early, but I wanted to, because as Stuart has noted, you just never know with the ferries and it's always better to be too early than too late. But by the same token, even if you don't want to leave that early, you could still get your car down there right after the previous ferry leaves and snag an early spot for the next ferry.
