Minimize driving in Glasgow City; prefer countryside

My husband and I plan to pick up a car in Glasgow for four days travel (generally Stirling,Oban & back to Glasgow areas). Is there a particular rental agency/location that would be better than others - allowing us to miss a lot of city traffic? we would be arriving by train from Edinburgh (can't seem to locate an agency allowing us to pick up car in Edinburgh and dropping off in Glasgow). Driving in the countryside doesn't seem as intimidating as doing so in the city - thanks for any information!

Have you tried Sixt? They had no problem with our picking up in one location and dropping off in another. I would suggest picking up at Edinburgh Airport rather than in the city. There are several easy options to get there from town, including a tram. Edinburgh can be a nightmare for traffic, especially in August between the arts festival and the military tattoo. Glasgow didn’t seem as bad.

Celtic Legend will allow it. We picked up in Edinburgh last year and dropped off in Glasgow.

Why not pick the car up at Glasgow airport? At Glasgow queen street catch the airport bus.
You are straight on to the motorway/freeway out of the airport.

Most mainstream car hire places allow pick up and drop off at different locations for a small charge so you could pick up in Edinburgh and avoid Glasgow completely - generally it's from their bigger hubs e.g. at airports.

Or go to Glasgow airport as it's well out of the city centre.

ArnoldClark didn't even bat an eye when we changed our drop off from GLA to EDI. They are close enough together that I don't think there's a one-way fee but maybe the agent was just being nice.

I picked up my rental car outside Glasgow (on South Street) from Arnold Clark (booked through Celtic Legend) and dropped it off outside Edinburgh (on Sighthill) 17 days later. Both of these locations were well outside the city so very little traffic, but I did not have to go all the way to the airport, which was nice. There was a small fee involved but it wasn't much. And Celtic Legend could not have been nicer about all of it - I highly recommend them! https://www.celticlegend.co.uk/car-rental/
