Can anyone recommend a really nice restaurant near the Royal Mile in Edinburgh? Not too expensive (or course). We will be there next May and looking for some recommendations for good places to eat as well as what do you think are the Must Try Foods in Scotland? Do they do Scotch eggs there? We had them in London and they were really good. We will be in Edinburgh for 5 nights after coming from 10 days in Ireland and 2 in Liverpool. We like pub food too. Thanks!
have a look here for some Michelin starred suggestions
and if you want a pub try this one - it was good enough for the Queen!
From Michelin to Ginsters pasties in two posts!
We discovered a place many years ago and have had a number of memorable meals there since with the most recent ones being in May of this year. It is Maison Bleue at 36 Victoria St. which is off George IV Bridge St. which is just off High St. (The Royal Mile) close to the castle. Go to googlemaps.com, type in the address, and you'll be able to locate it easily. You can use the street view to "walk" to it before leaving home. You can't miss the bleue façade. We've never had a problem being seated at lunch, but dinner reservations are advised. Small place, same ownership for years, and excellent food.
Not right along the Royal Mile, but the Tower Restaurant atop the National Museum is fabulous. The décor is modern and rather formal, but we saw people at other tables very casually dressed.
If you book your table around sunset (as we did) you'll have a great photo opportunity to get the skyline. Our waiter even guided me out onto the terrace so I could shoot without any glass window reflections.
When my parents I were in Edinburgh quite a few years ago we had a wonderful dinner at Stac Polly. To be honest at this point I am not sure which restaurant we ate at, but it was wonderfully Scottish and we loved it. It's not cheap, but it wasn't a total budget buster.

this is an old thread from Trip Advisor but most of the information is still very good.
Rambilinon mentions the Duddingston Inn, I actually live less than a mile away from there and visit from time to time, bit awkward to get to though. It does have a skittle alley you can hire for a fun night out.
BTW Scotch eggs are not particularly Scottish but are available in most supermarkets, Unlikely to see them on a menu though.
On the Royal Mile I do like The World's End for pub food, does in my opinion the best pub Fish & Chips in the city.
a higher end Restaurant near there is Wedgwood, been a couple of years since I was in there but it was superb.
Just been watching Saturday Kitchen on the BBC,guess what they were making.................................. yep Scotch eggs, looked great.
I had an extraordinary meal at David Bann, which is a block or two off the Royal Mile, lower end. It's modern cooking, and vegetarian. Yeah, not the traditional image of Scottish food, but it was pretty amazing.
Thanks for the suggestions. I can't wait to report back on our most memorable meal in Edinburgh.
I'm going back again in next May too.... Hope you enjoy your time in Edinburgh..
Not too far from the Royal mile is Aizle. I'd recommend it. Very different but quite good. Not sure what your "budget" is, but its worth it if you want fresh food.

We had a delicious meal at Angels with Bagpipes in August 2014. It is directly across from St. Giles Cathedral. Reservations recommended. We had a table over the walkway down the hill - lovely.
I'm headed to Scotland in June. Did you find a restaurant that you enjoyed? I use Open Table for reservations and have booked Whiski Rooms for dinner on our first night as I figure we will be too tired to search for dinner after a long day of travel and exploring. My reservation is easily changeable if there are better options. I've heard good things about Angels and Bagpipes. Anyone have strong opinions on either place? I am planning on World's End for lunch one day, but prefer something else for dinner. Scottish music would be a bonus. Sorry to her hijack your post!
We haven't went to Edinburgh yet. Will be there May 6-11. I can't wait.
As a do from work when I worked in the capital, we went to a Sudanese just south of the Old Town. Very delicious, and BYO for the alcohol.
One thing that some chefs have commented on, is Scotland is not the recipes. It is the produce. Scotland produces some fantastic foods. Seafood, beef, lamb etc on the carnivorous side. Scottish produce with Italian/Chinese chefs? Yum.
To add, the best steak I have ever had was cooked by a Polish chef in Tobermory. The key point is it is not what is served. It is the produce. Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb are EU PDOs for the time being. Salmon ditto. Great produce in the hands of a good to great chef = great grub.
Our most memorable meal was at the Witchery by the Castle where we had lunch one day. Very fancy place & the waiter had to ask if it was ok for us to share a meal. First course - pea soup & cheddar biscuits. Second course - Duck patties with lentils & spinach. Those duck patties were SO good. Dessert - the most heavenly chocolate torte I have ever eaten. Seriously. It was that good.
Another memorable meal was the haggis bon bons at the Royal Mile Tavern. It was the only time we tried haggis and it was delicous.
We did buy a package of Scotch eggs at the Tesco and had them for breakfast. I found out I'm not a fan of Irn Bru. We had bridie pie and Scotch pie on our day out of the city with Highland Tours. Both yummy.
I would recommend The Outsider by George IV bridge near Greyfriars Bobby. It's not too expensive and the menu changes daily.
Gardeners Cottage is also a popular local choice or if you are in the mood for a more casual setting, Innis and Gunn beer kitchen on Lothian road does gastro food and has an extensive craft beer menu.
