May Scotland tour travel question

We're flying into Edinburgh for the May 4 tour but the tour starts in Iverness. What's the best mode of transportation? We have almost 2 days before the tour so are thinking of spending one of them in Glasgow. Wondering what others have done pre-tour. Thanks for any tidbits or finger points in the right direction!

Best is always a subjective question,

The Scottish Citylink buses from both Glasgow and Edinburgh are far more frequent than the trains- hourly from both cities, so half hourly north of Perth. Through interchange with buses to Aberdeen at Perth both cities effectively

For most of the way bus and train share the same route- so the scenery is pretty much the same. And the bus is as fast as the train.

All bus journeys are code shared with Megabus- and their website is far cheaper to book on.

There are also infrequent but very cheap journeys run by Flixbus. And rumours are out that Ember Bus are planning to start running all electric buses on the route, possibly 24/7. That is unlikely to happen before May, as they seem to be concentrating on opening a new Fort William depot first.

On the other side of the coin, on 4 May, some of the rail journeys are as cheap as the bus- notably the LNER through train from London at 1632 from Waverley is the best train on the route- just £16.10 as I write.
And on the train you get to move around, and hopefully refreshments (certainly on LNER- Scotrail is more variable).

On 3 May LNER is not the cheapest option- but Scotrail trains that day start at £21.70
