Map making

Hello all!
Does anyone know of a map making site that will list cities and stops in and around those cities in order? My cousin and I will be traveling to Scotland in May and are planning to visit several areas and many attractions while there. Would like to create a drivable map that will take from one location to the next with attractions added in so we do not backtrack so much*like we did on previous trip). A y advise is appreciated!!

I just use google maps. I put in starting and ending city(ies) and then add other places, soon it the process you will see what order makes sense and you can slide the cities up and down to make the drive efficient.

Thank you. I have seen the mygooglemap site and looking at it. I hope to see of it works or if I create a map correctly. Fingers crossed.

With Google Maps, just put in your first town, then hit "directions" to your second. From there, use "search along the route" for things of interest, and use the "add stop" button. Google will automatically create the most efficient route. Unfortunately, Maps only lets you create a string of so many stops along the way (10?). You can drag the stops around in the list if opening hours, ferry times, tides etc. demand.

When I do planning, I input my arrival airport, then "add destination" for each place I think I'd like to stay, dragging the order to make a nice route. Then do the above between the towns to create a daily route.

Yes, the limit is 10. However, I just start a new one after that, beginning at the last destination of the previous list and then creating a new one.

Hi!!

Thank you jjgurley and mardee for the info! I will try doing the map for my first destination which is from Edinburgh Airport to about 5 miles outside of Stirling. If it works then I can create one from Stirling to Lochcarron. On that route I want to make sure we visit Lich Lomond along the way. Thank you again!!!!

Have a look at the map pages on the Undiscovered Scotland website These will give you ideas of places to visit and things to do in each of the different areas. (Confirm details of opening times etc on google) It also has suggestions for driving tours too. It does simplify planning a lot!

Just FYI, you can get around the 10 stop limit on Google Maps with a little effort. Just create two different maps, and edit the URL of one of them. You can "COPY" (Ctrl+C) the second map's URL, starting after the "/maps/dir/" and ending just before the "@" sign. Then paste it into the other URL just before the "@" sign and THEN delete all the gibberish from the "@" sign to the end (can be quite a long string). Double check you work to make sure there's a single "/" character at the junction (in case you copied an extra or none). Hit enter, and you'll have the full trip AND it is bookmark-able as is, AND you can even slide stops around, and it will preserve everything. I think the limit of this is about 25 stops, although that might have changed since I pressed the limit a few years ago.

I discovered that although Goggle still limits inputting more than 10 stops into Maps, I've found that if you do URL editing, the 24 stop limit has been raised to 40 or more. To take advantage of that without the hassle of editing, I wrote a little Windows script that just takes the URL of the two pages you want to connect. It's a tiny executable, that I've posted on my website as a ZIP file. Your browser, Windows Defender or McAfee might stop you from downloading ZIPs, or extracting them if they contain an EXE file - you'll have to figure that one out - there's usually a "keep" option or "run anyway" option. It is not a virus or other nasty program and I've only used it on Windows 11, but Win7/10 should work fine.

To use it, just bring up two pages that might add up to more than 10 stops, then start the program and copy the address bar contents of the two pages into the two provided boxes. It will then open a new browser window with the combined route. You can run the program again, enter the results page along with a third page, and keep growing the length of the list. I got bored at 40 entries, as they are hard to count! Note that the starting pages MUST be "Directions" pages and have at least two places.
