Major Wildfire in the Cairngorms National Park

For about a week now a major wildfire has been burning in the Cairngorms National Park.

Many roads in the area are closed, including all routes to the Cairngorm Mountain Resort. At one stage the fire was part contained, but with increasing winds today it has broken the containment lines.

The entire village of Nethy Bridge is now being evacuated, with residents sent to a respite centre at the MacDonald Aviemore Resort, following the declaration of a major incident (and instructed to take home insurance documents with them). All roads through Nethy Bridge are sealed off.

At least rain is forecast, which will hopefully assist very hard pressed fire crews.

Smoke is reported to have reached as far as Aberdeen. Intermittently the smoke has also been affecting driving conditions on the A9 around Dalwhinnie.
