luggage storage at train stations?

We are taking the train from Edinburgh to spend the day in Falkirk, need to a place to store luggage for the day before continuing onto Glasgow for night .

Also wondering if we need to book trains days early of can we buy tickets at the ticket station the same day?

First go to Glasgow, drop luggage off at hotel and then take train to Falkirk

Check nationalrail.co.uk for today's fares (or tomorrow's if it's too late to see today's) and fares out a few weeks. That will tell you whether you'll pay a fare penalty by waiting. For some trips in the UK, the day-of-travel fare can be something like five times as expensive as the deal you can get by buying a non-refundable ticket way in advance. I don't know whether you'll find something so extreme for your particular route.

In may cases, especially on long journeys acraven's advice is correct, but not in the current question.

Anytime Day Single £7.80 Edinburgh to Falkirk. No Off-Peak fares. No Advance Fares.

Anytime Day Single £16.10 Edinburgh to Glasgow Central or Queen Street, Off Peak Day Single £14.00. No Advance Fares.

Anytime Day Single £9.10 Falkirk to Glasgow. No Off-Peak fares. No Advance Fares.

In this instance there is no benefit to buying in advance at all.
