For information of anyone planning to travel by train from London to Glasgow on the West Coast (Avanti) route between 4 March and 16 April- the line will be closed north of Carlisle for major engineering work.
Timetables are not yet announced, but the usual pattern is that most trains are replaced by coach between Carlisle and Glasgow, with a handful of trains being diesel hauled on the slower route via Kilmarnock. Normally that runs as a Glasgow to Carlisle shuttle, then change at Carlisle for the south.
The coach is usually faster then the few diverted trains!
I was told this informally this morning by someone, but the basic information is buried deep on the Avanti website, as I checked before posting this.
That will add an extra hour onto your journey time plus the hassle.
Consider using the East Coast (LNER) route to Edinburgh then Scotrail to either Glasgow station.
Thanks for this info.
A few years ago I had to take the replacement bus from Glasgow to Carlisle. We were late due to serious traffic but they held the train.
We were told, upon arrival, we had five minutes to catch the train butno mention of which track the train was on. And no one working at the station seemed to know. Of course, it was the furthest track meaning up the stairs, over the bridge, and down the stairs.
