We'll be spending the night in Lochinver after leaving Thurso so that we can enjoy the sights down the west coast. Our ultimate goal is Skye. Should we spend the night in Plokton so that we can continue our viewing of the coast or can that all be done on our way to Portree?

It really depends on what you want to see. Lochinver to Portree is doable in half a day without stops even with stops not that long. So really it is your choice on this one.

Stops that you might want to do are Inverewe Gardens, Ullapool. When we did our "round the top" we stayed in Gairloch the first night, and then spent the second in Lochinver. But as MC says, it's doable to just go all the way through. Just remember that when you hit the Skye Bridge it's close to another 45 minutes to Portree.

Thanks for your replies. We've decided to stay in Gairloch after leaving Lochinver. We want to spend time on the coast before going to Skye. I've read that there's so much to see.
