LNER EDI to INV - Potential for Cancellations?

I've been checking the LNER website about Industrial Action/Strike during our upcoming trip to Scotland. We have tickets booked for Waverley to Inverness on August 3rd. The updated website message states this:

"We are also aware that members of the ASLEF union are taking action short of a strike from Monday 17 to Saturday 22 July and 31 July to 6 August 2023. We expect to run a normal timetable during these times, however, it is possible there will be short-notice alterations and cancellations."

Does anyone know how likely they are to cancel the leg north of Edinburgh on short notice in these types of situations? I'm wondering if we should just book backup tickets on Scotrail as we have an Isle of Skye tour out of Inverness booked for the following day.

Most routes on strike days are confirmed a few days before, typically say a Monday for a Friday strike. The operators and other parties all sit down and see what resources they have then sort out their priority routes first, then update the schedules.

It's not a hard and fast thing but has been the pattern.

Such short notice is of limited use to travellers, unfortunately.

I would keep checking the LNER website for any changes. They are great about timely notifications.

I traveled this past May on a LNER train during 2 different strikes—the train drivers and the train conductors--and was still able to take my journey.

If your journey is cancelled, you will be notified and sent instructions to select another train.

So, I’d keep an eye on the situation, but would not worry. And I’d take the "We expect to run a normal timetable during these times” to be a very good indication that this indeed will happen.

It looks like on the strike days they cancel the EDI to INV leg so the fact that they are running normal timetables makes me hopeful. There's some backup bus options that I found if we can't make it by train.

If the Edinburgh to Inverness section of the journey is cancelled then your LNER ticket would automatically be accepted on the next Scotrail train. Scotrail are not involved in the ongoing industrial action, so you will reach Inverness that night.
Don't waste your money booking a back up Scotrail train, or a coach.
If the LNER train arrived several hours late, so missing the last Scotrail connection then there is a legal requirement for LNER to get you to Inverness- even if they have to hire a taxi (at their expense) to get you there.
