Late Spring or Early Fall

Planning a 2020 Scotland RS 10 day tour and cannot decide on spring or fall ? My husband of a golfer and would like to add on a few extra days for a self guided trip back up to St Andrews to play at a public course in the area. Weather wise would this be better in spring or fall? Then we may take a train down through England stopping at Manchester to meet a friend and then on to London for a few days before heading home.
I love this forum. You were all so helpful when we planned Italy last year. Couldn't have done it without the info I gathered here.

Late spring has the advantage over early fall with longer daylight hours. I don't think that St. Andrews has balls with lights for low light play. That would not be traditional.

The number of hours of bright sunshine is controlled by the length of
day and by cloudiness. In general, December is the dullest month and
May or June the sunniest.

If you are calling September early fall, then that is a good time. Not quite as much light as May, but still quite decent. And in early September you can get the tail end of the heather. Either way, you will have a good time!
