Is there any other place to look for tickets for the Jacobite Train if the website states the date is sold out? It does say there is a possibility of walk up tickets the day of but we are a group of 4 adults and 2 children. We do not have flexibility for the date (April 12) Any suggestions for possible options will be much appreciated!
There have been many discussions on the Forum about the Jacobite train - here is one I found of many using the Search function (greyed out, upper left corner on IPad). The train may not be running.
We don't even know whether the Jacobite is running this year.
West Coast Railways are happily selling tickets for a train which they don't have train cars to operate it with, following a court ruling over door safety on the cars.
No one will know until sometime in March if they are prepared to comply with the court ruling to fit new, compliant, door locks; or whether they have found other train cars which meet the regulations. There is much speculation within the heritage rail industry surrounding what might happen.
West Coast Railways are the sole vendors of their Jacobite train tickets.
You should look at using the normal diesel service train, run by Scotrail, which travels over exactly the same tracks. Tickets are currently on sale for that train which leaves Fort William at 0815 and 1212 returning at 1010 and 1605. Fares are currently £8.90 each way.
just above is what I would have said but Stuart said it first, and more eloquently
There is still no news from West Coast Railways on whether they will be able to run the Jacobite Train this year.
The current plan is they will use substitute carriages.
Instead of the 1951-60 built Mark 1 type with opening windows ventilators, they are planning to substitute 1972-74 build air-conditioned Mark 2 E/F vehicles with sealed windows.
There is a stock move booked on the 25th which will reveal intentions...
The above alleged stock move was never timetabled in the industry working timetables.
West Coast Railways have confirmed today that the train is now suspended until further notice. There is no time schedule for the service to start this season's operations.
Refunds to booked passengers are to be processed.
West Coast Railways are still fighting the Office of Rail Regulation rather than actually making the required modifications or leasing alternative rolling stock.
