Jacobite Steam Train--ride just the return?

Is it possible to ride just the Mallaig to Fort William leg of the Jacobite? I know that we'd have to purchase a round-trip ticket regardless, but can you just get on at Mallaig if you haven't done the first leg? We're going to Glasgow from Skye, and would like to fit in the Jacobite, if possible. If not, we'll just take the regular ScotRail train, we know that it is the same route.

Thanks for any input!

The answer has to be constrained by Community Guideline 7 concerning illegal acts.

Officially you are not supposed to do that.

In the FAQ's about buying an Open Return ticket (travel out and back on different days) West Coast Trains state that you would have to buy two return tickets (one for each day). So in effect they are condoning the use of return tickets for single journeys including doing a single journey from Mallaig.

Also they cater for a lot of bus excursion passengers who do single trips, in one direction or the other.

So if you are happy to pay about triple the price of a Scotrail single ticket to ride a steam train that is the situation.
