Iverness Pop up Thrift shops

Hi,
The Rick Steves Scotland guide mentions pop-up charity shops in Iverness. I can't find any info anywhere on their times or locations. I do have a list of permanent charity shops for the town, but pop-ups wouldn't be listed.

Can anyone comment on this? Thanks, Linda

Hi, Linda,

By "pop-up" charity shops, I think that Rick's writers meant charity shops in general. All of them have permanent locations. We visit them every time we're in Inverness. There are so many that it takes half a day just to visit the centrally located shops.

The best that we've found are the Highland Hospice in Falcon Square, the OXFAM shop on Lombard Street, and the Blythswood on Harbour Road.

Since our last visit, it appears that there is a new Highland Hospice shop on Harbour Road. That and the Blythswood shop are a bit removed from the center of town, but close enough together to make the side trip worthwhile.

Shop 'til you drop!

If anyone would know, it would be Mike (auchterless) who has made it his travel mission to hit every charity shop in Scotland, lol! Seriously, he has made some great finds! Hopefully he will see this but if not, you might try sending him a PM.

Definitely as Mike says! There are no pop up charity shops, maybe he meant what we'd call 'jumble sales' or 'table top sales' where people sell their stuff (sometimes for charity - or an organisation like the local school or youth groups). Mike knows all the best charity shops and Highland Hospice is my go to place for interesting bargains.

What I saw in Edinburgh, Inverness and Ayr, were small shops in what I thought may have otherwise been vacant store fronts. They were usually all in the same general location.

The charity shops are permanent shops and very clearly marked as to which charity they operate for. As Skyegirl says 'jumble sales' or 'car boot sales' are the pop up second hand markets.

Charity shops are sometimes temporary, being charged peppercorn rents while properties are vacant, so some may come and go.

In the modern era of hollowed out town centres, it's quite common for vacant storefronts to be let as charity shops.

"Pop up" isn't a term I would use. That applies more to more hip instances, like fashion etc. that are deliberately only there for a short time.
