Itinerary suggestions over the holidays

Our family will be visiting Edinburgh from Dec26-Dec30, 2015. We are an outdoorsy family and would love to work in a short hike somewhere. Other than the usual Royal Mile walk does anyone have any suggestions for other places we should try to get to? It is over the holidays and the days will be short. Ideally, we would love suggestions for a day trip/hike not too far from Edinburgh that could be reached by public transport.

Thanks for any recommendations.

If you want to stay in the city, Leith Water walk is interesting. I only did a small bit of it, as far as the art gallery.

Of course you can climb Arthur's Seat.

There is a new cross country trail, The John Muir Way that you might want to explore. You don't need to do the whole thing obviously! You could likely easily get to Dunbar and walk there.

If you really want to get out of Edinburgh you could take the train to Dunked and walk in the hills there. There is the added benefit of a great pub--The Taybank.

Then there are probably some walks that you could access from the new Borders Railway. Unclegus or MC may respond with further suggestions.
