Help! Traveling to Scotland for the first time with four kids ages 7 to 14. Would like to start in the Highlands and make our way down to Edinburgh for Hogmanay . Will be renting a car! Any itinerary help would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the forum-
To help the Community to help you- are you going to Edinburgh merely for Hogmanay night, or for the whole three days of build up- 29 to 31 December? At the moment, in late July, not much has been confirmed, but this is the event website just in case you haven't seen it- https://www.edinburghshogmanay.com/
And are you proposing to be in Scotland for Christmas, or arriving during the "Twixmas" days of 27 to 29 December? Essentially the question is, how long do you have for the road trip, and what are your family's interests, being aware that many tourist sites will be closed, and that the days are pretty short for driving,
If in Scotland for Christmas then in the Highlands (more so than in Central Scotland) things really do totally close down for 25 and 26 December and any accommodation which is open will be charging seasonal (premium) prices.
Welcome
I'd add to isn31c's points above. Outwith the cities the default position of most places to visit is 'closed'. Ferries will not be running on 25th December and 1st Jan. Daylight is very short, I work 8 to 4 and in December I start in the dark and finish in the dark. The weather can be very, very variable. It can snow heavily, rain substantially, or be a nice pleasant day to be out and about. But the weather can also cause major disruption on the roads and rails.
However, a lot of people do come to Scotland for Christmas and New Year and it can be special especially if self catering somewhere more rural.
Further details of what your plans or ideas are would help.
Thank you so kindly for feedback, most helpful!! With that being said, we may pivot and do Vienna for Twixmas, I think that may be a better fit! I'll start a new thread!
