Hi folks,
I have an itinerary for a trip starting in late February and into March and I have a few questions... This it tied to a conference in Glasgow, so the first few days we are there will be in Glasgow (I'll be stomping the city while my wife is in the conference).
Sun-Wed - Stay in Glasgow
Th 26 - Train to Edinburgh and back, stay in Glasgow
Fri 27 - Get rental car, go to Siccar Point, then possibly Roslin Chapel, and then head to Oban to stay the night
Sat 28 - Day trip out from Oban, maybe Cambeltown direction
Sun March 1 - Day trip out from Oban, Glencoe
Mon 2 - Drive toward Ft. William and then to ferry to Skye, stay near Dunvegan
Tue 3 - Day trip on Skye #1
Wed 4 - Day trip on Skye #2
Th 5 - Drive to Inverness along Loch Ness
Fri 6 - Day near Inverness... not sure exactly what it the moment
Sat 7 - Drive to Sterling and see that area and stay closer to Glasgow
Sun 8 - Drop car off at airport and depart (12:00 departure)
OK, so just a few questions:
Siccar Point is maybe an hour east of Edinburgh and is an important stop, so I need to figure out whether I can squeeze this in. If we pick up the car reasonable early, I figure we can drive down there, spend some time and then turn around and go past Roslin and if we are early enough, we could stop there. If not, we just head to Oban. This day feels a bit like alot of driving, but I don't think we have a better way to pick up Siccar Point and so we just may get into Oban later than ideal, but we'll have a few days in the area after that, so I think it's OK. Please let me know if I'm not going to be able to make this possible!
Only one day in Edinburgh... I know we could spend more time in Edinburgh but we are more interested on the countryside and so we don't want to take a day elsewhere for more time there. We can always come back, so I'm good with this, but looking for specific recommendations for a day there... (castle, Carlton Hill, dinner in town, back to Glasgow possibly)
Do we head down toward Campbeltown for one of the days in Oban or should I focus more on Gencoe and the hills to the east? There's so much to see in that area... I feel like maybe Campbeltown should wait for a later trip.
Skipping to Inverness, is there anything I should be targeting for the one full day we have planned in the area? Not necessarily in town, but other than Loch Ness (which we will drive by on the way there) I guess the only other thing I know about nearby is Culloden, which is certainly on the list.
General drivability in late February and March... It appears that where we are planning to go does have a mountain pass or two along the way, but I presume that these roads will all be open unless there is an active storm system, in which case, things may have to change a little. Does that sound correct?
Thanks for your feedback. We're ready to make final bookings!
