Itineary for 17 days

Hi, I have had some useful answers to my other questions so am hoping for some help with our final plans. We bought our tickets to and out of Edinburgh as that was the least expensive with least hours, so that is set. Looking at care rental from Arnold. I am thinking a couple days in Edinburgh, then up to Inverness area for a couple days , then up to Thurso and visit Orkney, then down to Ulapool and Grailoch area for a couple days, then to Glen Affric area for a couple days, then back to Edinburgh. I thought about Oban in the mix but thinking maybe it was too much. Thanks so much!

Hi debjsd, from what I can tell, your trip will be 17 days and yet you have five different places listed that you wish to travel to. That’s a lot for only 17 days, especially if you are planning to go up to Orkney. That averages out to approximately three days per place, and that does not include travel time, which will be considerable.

Can you give us a more definite schedule as to what you’re doing?

We attempted to go to Scotland the first week in June, 2023.

We had to go to Plan B when affordable accommodations were unaffordable. The hotels and B&B's in high season is in so much demand--and rooms were not easily found.

We ended up flying down to Athens and catching a cruise of the Eastern Med.

Make your room reservations as soon as possible for Scotland. The place is very popular in high season.

It would make sense to do Glen Affric from Inverness, as there is no through road to link to the west coast. It can be done as a day visit from Inverness. Then head north to Thurso.

I'm assuming you are planning on a loop a bit like this (and back to Edinburgh)? It is doable in 17 days but is going to involve a lot of driving and seeing Scotland through a windscreen. Don't underestimate driving times. Distances may not look far on a map but will take a lot longer to cover than you might expect. In rural areas speeds are likely to be 30-40 miles an hour.

Make sure you get accommodation booked well in advance as in many areas there isn't much choice. Also book your ferry when booking slots become available.
