Isle of Skye Restaurants

We had to cancel our 2020 trip due to pandemic and finally have rebooked! We were able to use our credit with the Kinloch Inn for 2 nights, then we move to Cullin Hills Hotel for 2 nights. I booked the Kinloch Restaurant for 1 night and Cullin Hills Hotel Restaurant for 2 nights as their recent reviews are very good. I'm wondering if I should book Kinloch for our arrival night also or will we be able find someplace with lighter fare close by...3 big dinners with multiple courses seems like alot. Thanks for any feedback!

Hi Cindy
Personally I would do Cullin Hills restaurant and try one of the other Portree restaurants on your other night. Scorrybreac gets consistently good ratings. Scorrybreac

As for Kinloch - well if you have a car then you could get into Broadford where you could eat at Cafe Sia or the Claymore, or you could go here Eilean Iarmain which is supposed to be very nice.

Hope that helps

Even when I was in my 20s (45+ years ago), I was never interested in a full dinner on my arrival day; I only wanted to survive it. I wouldn't want to spend the money for a really nice place (which I'm guessing your picks are) and then not remember the meal.

Yep we reserved the Cafe Sia for arrival day, then Kinloch day 2, Scorrybreac day 3 and Cullin day 4. We can cancel up to 24 hours before so figure we can be a bit flexible once we arrive. Thanks so much for the comments...made easy planning for me!

Our favorite places for a lighter meal are Cafe Arriba in Portree overlooking the water and the Granary which is right in the square. There was another great burger place we stumbled upon by accident. It’s in the back of the hardware store. I can’t recall the name. We also grabbed some lovely cake at Skye bakery which has a great little art gallery. They sell, the art and I snagged two gorgeous photos last time. If you are fancy the Three Chimneys was very nice but is further away, I plan to take my mother in law there for tea, We will be back in 3 weeks and I can hardly wait!

We had an outstanding meal at the Red Skye restaurant. It is located between Broadford and the Skye bridge.

Just to say that the Three Chimneys do not serve afternoon tea. You can book there for lunch or dinner only.

The hardware store is Jans and is on the edge of Portree. There is a cafe in the back of the shop. It's a mainstay for locals. That probably tells you what you need to know! It's not a burger place but there is usually a burger on the menu.

There's also a Chinese carryout in Portree that's useful if you have failed to make a dinner reservation. When I stopped in, there was a small Asian tour group getting dinner there.

In addition to the Fat Panda Chinese takeaway we now also have a noodle bar and a sushi place in Portree.

Just booked 3 nights in Skye in June at an AirBnb walkable to Portree so following along here!!

Should we be making dinner reservations ahead, or am I reading this wrong?

Hi Dan
Yes definitely worth making dinner reservations in advance. Otherwise you may find yourself eating very late, or not being able to get a table at all.
Best wishes

I can't for the life of me figure out how to book a table at the Red Skye restaurant. Their website is down, email does not work, and can't get trough by phone. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Last week we had an excellent meal at The Harbour in Broadford. Book at least a day in advance. We enjoyed Red Skye when we last visited (2015) but gave up on eating there this time. Their website has been down for over a month and a couple of times when I tried to use it I got one of those warnings that the site was unsecured and dangerous. Too bad they don't fix their website.

We ate at Cafe Sia in Broadford on our way from the ferry to Portree - delicious woodfired pizza and a very nice charcuterie board, which was perfect for the two of us to share without being full. We arrived on a Saturday around 5:30-ish with no reservations, and while they didn't have seating available indoors, they did have a nice covered patio that only had one other table filled.

Thanks, Laurie, that reminded me to email for my Cafe Sia reservation. I have a reservation for The Old Schoolhouse one night and plan to try the Sia Fish & Chips one night, before moving on to Portree for my last night.

Edit: update from Cafe Sia in Broadford. I emailed for a mid-July reservation and currently they are not taking reservations (may again in the future) - first come, first served. They said typical wait is not more than 10-15 min and often not even that.

Here's another vote for Cafe Sia. Food is reasonably priced. The Highland Melt is excellent. It's a good way to be introduced to haggis.

Last time we were there, we ordered pizza. Unfortunately the first one was badly burnt. But they replaced it at no charge. Looking forward to returning.

Bon appetit!

We were in Portree for three nights two weeks ago, and there were three types of restaurants. 1) Sign out front saying "sorry, fully booked? (very frustrating to see all the vacant tables, but short-staffed) 2) line of six to ten people waiting for first come first served and 3) the Indian Restaurant. We ended up having Indian (quite good) twice and getting into Cullin Hills after only 30 minutes once. There's a Japanese that was rumored to have walk-in space.

In the days before the visit, efforts to book tables failed due to insufficient notice or insufficient cell coverage. I would have had to make international calls to book earlier as it was just days 5-7 of our trip.
