Isle of Rum

What the article doesn't tell you is that Rum is the worst place in Scotland for midges. They are absolutely vicious. Our lodging had warning notices to keep the windows closed at all times to keep them out. Midge hats and long sleeves are a necessity.

Other than the midges, Rum is a beautiful island, with red deer and Rum ponies wandering about everywhere. There is a well stocked shop, a community cafe, Kinloch Castle, and lots of hiking trails. CalMac serves Rum out of Mallaig several days a week, as does Arisaig Marine (MV Shearwater) out of Arisaig.

Things like that are why window screens were invented. I've always wondered why you see them almost no where in Europe.

Did you see the video on the Facebook Group Scotland from the Roadside? It is an amazing group that anyone who loves Scotland and is on Facebook should join. Said video was terrifying. Happily, I have never faced midgies that bad. I do recommend a midgie hat for anyone intending to walk (hike) in Scotland.
