Isle of Mull without a car?

Hi all,

We will be in the highlands in three weeks based out of Appin. We wanted to take the ferry from Oban to the Isle of Mull. There are foot passenger tickets available but no spaces for cars :(. Is it possible to spend the day on the Isle of Mull without a car?

It’s possible on your own if you only want to see one of two places - either taking the service bus up to Tobermory or doing the tour out to Fionnphort to see Iona and possibly do the `Staffa boat trip (fab scenery, Fingal’s Cave and potentially puffins.) You can also book that tour in Oban - see link below:

https://westcoasttours.co.uk/book-tour/tour-mull-iona-and-staffa/

You don’t have to do the Staffa trip of course but it is wonderful.

There are organised day tours on Mull mainly focused on wildlife watching , one option in the link below but there are others…

Otherwise, Mull does not lend itself to getting about without your own car sadly.

There are also whale watching trips going out from Tobermory.I also think some of the Staffa/Treshnish Isles trip operators will pick up from Craignure itself where the ferry comes in but check their websites - Turus Mara or Staffa Tours.Long standing boat trip operators.

You can also get to Calgary Beach and to the Isle of Ulva on the bus.

Wondering if anyone has visited Mull during the Highland Games in July?? We plan on taking the ferry (no car) and staying in Tobermory and can't find much on transportation to and from the games. Any insight is appreciated

I'm pretty sure the Games take place near Tobermory, so you shouldn't have any problem getting there. Coming back after checking, yes, here is a website to the games for 2026, and getting there from Tobermory is easily walkable.

Here is their website with all the details. https://mullhighlandgames.com/on-the-day/

Oops, I just realized that is for 2025, so date details are still yet to come. But I would imagine that the place and so on will stay the same. That said, this site lists the dates for 2026, but it is NOT an official site, so I would hold off on booking anything until it's confirmed with the first site I linked to. https://mulldirectory.co.uk/events/the-mull-highland-games/

You can also check on the official site's Facebook page. If you have a Facebook account, just follow it, and you should get notifications once they update their posts there. https://www.facebook.com/MullHighlandGames

The date IS confirmed on their official website on the banner at the top of the home page-as 23 July 2026.

A service bus to Tobermory meets every ferry from Oban at Craignure- it always does.

The games take place at the Golf Course at Tobermory on Erray Road, round the harbour and a bit uphill from the main bus stop for the town at Ledaig.

When booking opens around March time, you will want to book foot passenger space, although that doesn't need to be done so soon- a week or less beforehand will do, especially if on the big ship the Isle of Mull.
