Islay transpo question

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-46044893

We already plan to hop over to Bergen on one of our upcoming Edinburgh visits; but the above news story link makes Islay an alternative option for us too.

Air BnB options are plentiful on Islay so we’re all set there.

We know nothing about Islay. Anyone ever been there? What public transportation options would we have on the island?

Any books you recommend about Islay?

Thank you in advanced for your advice/feedback.

Hi, Explorer,

There is a regular bus service on Islay, which operates Monday to Friday. They do stop at the airport, and travel through most of the villages around the island. The schedule is on line.

You could also hire a car from Islay Car Hire (01496 810544), if you want to be more independent in your travels.

Check www.islayinfo.com for more info. Norman Newton's 2009 book is available on Amazon.

Rick doesn't cover Islay in "Best of Scotland", but there are about four pages on the island in the Rough Guide (not a current one) I recently borrowed from the library.

Great news about the route from Edinburgh. I can't recommend any books on Islay, but I can recommend a few whiskies. Islay is the capital for peaty, smoky single malt whisky and for some of us it's a place of pilgrimage. I haven't made it there yet, but this new flight from Edinburgh makes it a bit easier.

Hi again, Explorer,

The latest Lonely Planet guide to Scotland (2017) has five pages on Islay, but most of the information therein can be found on their on line website.
