Hi,
Will be spending 3 nights in Edinburgh then the plan is to rent a car and make a loop up through the Highlands and ending in Glasgow. Would like to visit Islay. Is it good for an overnight? Any route recommendations would be appreciated. Inverness doesn’t seem to interest us, however Oban and perhaps Loch Lomond before getting to Glasgow would.

Twice a week you should be able to do the Oban to Islay direct ferry- timetables are awaited.
Coming back why not route through Arran, using the Claonaig to Lochranza ferry?, then to Ardrossan and back to Edinburgh.
You could several nights on Islay.
