is winter coat necessary for middle of october in scotland

Historic data suggests highs will be in the mid 50s and lows in the mid 40s'.

Bring whatever coat keeps you comfortable in that temperature range.

Mid-50's will mean different things to different people. For me that's shorts and a windproof jacket in the daytime. We were in Amsterdam last year and the temperature was in the mid-60's and that's how how I was dressed, but we befriended a couple from Australia and they were wearing jeans and puffer jackets that day. Mid-40's and I haven't even thought about my winter jacket yet.

And a raincoat, hat and gloves. Maybe wet and windy, if not that would be wonderful.

Are you planning to be outside mostly? Or more in and out of museums, restaurants, shops...?

I would pack with layering in mind. Long sleeve tops, a couple merino or cashmere sweaters to wear alone or layer, a puffer vest or jacket and a waterproof raincoat/jacket. Throw in a base layer like Cuddleduds or Uniqlo Heattech and a pair of gloves and a scarf and you'll be good for a range of temperatures and weather conditions.

Where in Scotland? Dressing for the islands might be different than dressing for the larger cities.

Where in Scotland are you going? And what do you mean by a ‘winter coat’. To me a winter coat could be a long, well insulated coat, like a long puffer coat, but it could equally be what I wear year round in Skye, which is a water proof and windproof jacket with a hood, under which I simply wear additional layers in cold weather. You are more likely to experience wind and a lot of rain than freezing temperatures. The wetter and windier the further north and west you go.

This May we were in Lerwick and there was an ice/snow storm. I wished I had a extra layer beyond a t-shirt, fleece, and rain shell. Snow didn't accumulate.

I will be in edinburgh,and the islands.Looks like I need a puffer vest to go along with sweaters,rain jacket,gloves,scarf,waterproof shoes.I love the temps kn the 40’s and 50’s.Cant wait for my first trip to Scotland.

Definitely go with either a puffy vest or jacket. If you don't have one, look at the company 32 Degrees. They are sold in Costco but have a better color selection on their website. They are inexpensive and do the trick of keeping you warm UNDER a rain jacket.

I'd be wary of "sweaters". I'm a light packer and sweaters are bulky so I would not take more than one if any unless they are very thin and being used for layering.

Which islands do you mean...and so sorry to get very particular about this! You'll likely have wind on any Scottish island so that will bring the "feels like" temp down.

BTW 32 degrees also has some very thin base layers. You might consider getting a base layer bottom which is thin enough to wear under your regular pants if you are going to be outdoors a lot.

In 2024 we were in Lerwick in the first week of May and the temperatures were up in the high teens centigrade (I can’t do “old” money any more!). My wife and son were swimming in the sea. That’s to show that the weather in the UK is very unpredictable. You might need a winter coat if you’re unlucky. You could equally be cursing bringing it if there is a mild spell. Layers are the answer.

Have a look at the Uniqlo puffer vests and jackets. They are reasonably priced and good quality. You can also probably find some on EBay.

Oh yes, then. Do expect some wind. I've never been as wet as the day I was on a Rick Steves tour from Oban to Iona. In June, hahaha.

I also recommend some lightweight glove liners. I use Smartwool ones but if you live in the south just get something that might be available in Target and is inexpensive.

I prefer layers to one heavy coat but others feel differently. I want to be able to adjust more than just on or off, hahaha!

I would take a coat, but maybe not a huge long winter coat. Something with padding is never going to be too hot for Scotland in October. Layers are ok but if it’s chilly then you’re wearing all of them, all the time, so it’s easier to just have a coat and be done with it.

Around mid to late October, temperatures are usually somewhere around 8–14°C during the day. A warm jacket, sweater and some layers should be enough for most people. Evenings can feel quite a bit colder, especially with the wind. It also depends on how well you handle the cold — if you get cold easily, a proper winter coat might be useful, but otherwise warm clothes and layers should be fine.
