Iona

We will be in Scotland for a week in early April and want to visit Iona for one or two days. We will be driving, but know you cannot take a car onto the island. What advice do you have for a place to stay and is one night enough with the ferries. Do we need to get tickets in advance for the abbey?

Buying before on line does save a little bit of money on the walk up price. You can always check the website before visitin g to get an idea of how many tickets are available and if you need to book. (Bookings aren't available for April yet.)

Iona is wonderful with some gorgeous easy walks which allow you explore other parts of the island.

The Argyll Hotel is lovely and does very good food. We’ve also stayed in a self catering property…check booking.com and Airbnb to see what is available. There are also B&Bs of course.
One night would be perfect.
Don’t miss a walk out beyond the Abbey to the North End beaches, a glorious walk.Look out for sea eagles(on Mull too.)
A walk up little Dun I, the island’s highest hill at barely 100m is easily done too on an obvious path though it is steepish. The views of mountains, the ocean and islands is stunning.Look out too for the Well of Eternal Youth, just below the grassy summit.
You can also stay in Fionnphort itself and simply, go over each day to Iona but staying on the island is lovely.
The seafood hut at the pier at Fionnphort does very good takeaway food with a small outdoor seating area too(if the weather is up to that.)
You can also walk out to St Columba’s Bay where it is said he landed, though that is a longer hike to the island’s southern end.For beauty, you can’t beat the North End and Dun I.

Thank you so much for all of these details. Seeing Iona is the root of our trip to Scotland and Ireland. You have encouraged me even further.

We really liked the Columba Hotel. If you can stay 2 nights I highly recommend that. It gives you more time to settle into the rhythm of the island and slow down. The Abbey has some really cool short services in the morning and evening if you are interested. We found them incredibly moving. Iona is a special place.
