Inverness to Ullapool to Skye

Traveling for two weeks in Scotland and have the first week settled until we get to Inverness via bus from Oban. At that point picking up a car rental and thinking of driving to Ullapool then down to Skye. Wondering if it's better to drive north from Skye or South from Ullapool. Considering taking a long route to Ullapool via Lairg and Ledmore or taking the straight route via A835 and doing day trips of Ullapool is a more interesting option. Mid-summer trip and I know we are late figuring this part out!

That's a long road trip, unless you're planning to break it up. You would be doing some backtracking if you drive from Oban to Ullapool then to Skye. And the times that Google maps gives you will probably need to be extended, especially in the summer with all the extra tourists on the roads.

One extra though: if you haven't booked your Skye accommodations yet, I would get on that right away. Even in the shoulder season, lodging at a reasonable price is hard to find, and it gets much worse in the summer.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. That's why I wanted to go to Ullapool from Inverness then south to Skye. Hoping it's just as scenic if going south! I am certain I am overthinking this.
