Inverness to Troon

We are planning a (mainly golf) trip to Scotland next summer. If we leave Inverness on Friday morning (by car), how would you recommend we spend the four days until we arrive in Troon on Monday night?

We will have tee times at Royal Troon on Tuesday - so need to arrive in Troon on Monday evening. We have been to Scotland a few times but not the area from Inverness to Troon. We will have spent 7 days in Inverness. We are interested in scenery, history (castles, some churches) and general sight seeing - but not museums. We are not planning to play golf on these 4 days - unless someone knows of a "don't miss course" between Inverness and Troon.

I appreciate your input.

Not much to say on my part from Inverness to Troon except for lunch or dinner at Loch Fyne Oysters near Inverary.

In Troon, though, I'm full of suggestions. For golf, also try the Darly course at Troon Municipal, a great links type course on the other side of the railroad from Royal Troon. Also, I see they just held the Scottish Open at the Dundonald Links, which did not exist 20 years ago when I was working at the paper mill next door. There are 6 or 7 other courses in the neighborhood, including The Gailes Links, Kilmarnock(Barassie), Prestwick.

For lodging I suggest The Anchorage in Troon harbor, unless of course you are going whole hog and staying at the Marine Highland right on the 18th fairway at Royal Troon.
