Inverness to Glasgow or Edinburgh by train?

Hello,

At the end of my trip with my family (teenage twins, my 80 something father), we are going to take the train from Inverness to either Glasgow or to Edinburgh. The next day we will fly from one of the two to Dublin. We will have already been to Edinburgh and will have have driven from there (I'm returning the car rental partway through our trip). Which would people recommend, mainly in terms of the train ride view (inverness to Glasgow or Inverness to Edinburgh), but also how worthwhile a night in Glasgow would be. Thank you!

Apologies if this is too late for your trip, but even so others may find it useful.

Trains from Inverness to Edinburgh or Glasgow share a route to Larbert about 6 miles south of the city of Stirling, Glasgow trains then turn to head west and Edinburgh ones turn east.

The best scenery is north of Perth, shared by trains to either Edinburgh or Glasgow from Inverness, with the climbs up from Inverness to Slochd and from Dalwhinnie to Drumochter (which is the highest point on the UK Rail network), you get the views over the Cairngorm mountains and generally good scenery for most of the route.

The line from Perth south to Stirling isn't quite as scenic but involves still pleasant rolling hills and farmland through southern Perthshire into Stirlingshire. Passing the town of Dunblane, the town's cathedral can be seen next to the line on the left side heading south (approximately 5 mins before arriving in Stirling).
