Inverness clothing suggestions

Arrived in Inverness 18 June early for R Steves tour. People dressed in t-shirts/shorts, or rain jackets, or winter puff coats. Weather was as varied as the dress. Sun out-a bit warmer; minutes later wind blowing so hard jacket needed zippering and hat needed holding. Temp in mid-60s, but weather channel said felt like low 50s.

Prepare with layers.

We were in Scotland last week and I've never been in a place where deciding what to wear was more confusing. We settled on 3 layers; Tshirt, long sleeve knit shirt and then a waterproof AND windproof jacket. All 3 were required in morning and evening, 2 layers in the afternoon and on the rare occasion when the sun was out and the planets were aligned, we stripped down to 1 layer. Never wore my shorts.

I live in the Highlands (Skye) and have never worn shorts since moving here 7 years ago. I barely ever wear short sleeves. My usual attire when venturing outdoors is windproof, water resistant hiking trousers, a base layer T shirt, a half zip lightweight fleece and a windproof, waterproof jacket with a hood. I also carry gloves and a hat all year round. I wear lightweight water resistant hiking shoes year round. An umbrella is also useless here due to the high winds.

The late afternoon we arrived in Inverness, it was cold and gray with a miserable steady rain. We were just about the only ones in the tour group to walk a few blocks to dinner in our rain jackets. Everyone else ate at the hotel rather than brave the grim weather (it had already been a pretty busy tour day). The next morning was gorgeous, sunny and warm. Scotland was kinda like that everywhere we went.
