Inverness airport vs. Edinburgh or Glasgow?

As I'm tracking flights I see that it's a little cheaper for us to fly home to the US from Inverness instead of Edinburgh or Glasgow. As we will be staying near Inverness at the end of our trip and wouldn't have to drive back to Edinburgh and stay at the airport for just one night to get home, I'm thinking this might be a nice option?

We do have two connections with the Inverness options --Amsterdam and then Boston -- before getting home to Pittsburgh, but I'm thinking this might be worth it because we will have an extra day in the highlands and less moving around?

Any thoughts?

With rules ever changing re Covid, I would opt for flights that minimised the number of countries transited.

What if you aren’t allowed to enter or transit Holland from the U.K. at your time of travel ? This has happened before and it’s an extra level of stress. I would opt for just changing planes in America.

I have flown in and out of all three airports. Inverness is a very small airport. That makes it very easy to navigate.

However, as Jennifer states, who knows what the rules will be when you have your flights. Additionally, the more legs of your journey, the better chance of delays and missed flights.

Checking on the HIAL website, the only direct flights from Inverness are to other European destinations, therefore a connection somewhere will be required. Although transiting through Schipol you would be entering the Netherlands, I would follow the other posters and say you'd probably want to keep the number of jurisdictions down to the minimum.

Good point, and we may very well avoid Inverness, but out of curiosity, if we are all vaccinated (we are), and will already have negative COVID tests (mandatory for returning to US), why would transferring through Amsterdam be a problem?

Do they have a history of shutting down to passengers from the UK, or especially stringent requirements?

Just curious... trying to get my husband to make a call on this and he is tasking me with gathering more info instead of weighing in!

There was a time some months ago when Schipol didn't even allow Americans to change planes. I don't know whether the airport ever blocked transfer passengers originating in the UK, but the Netherlands has a recent history of saying "If we won't let you in for the purposes of tourism, we're not going to let you change planes, either."
