I am planning a trip to Scotland in Sept. I want to use public transportation ( rail & bus). I would like to see Glasgow, Oban, Mallaig, Skye, Inverness, Stirling & Edinburgh. Starting in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Any suggestion? I am having the most trouble figuring out hoe to go from Mallaig to Portree or Portree to Mallaig. How easy is it to get around Skye & do a few walking tours a day? I am planning on 14 days start to finish. That includes my flight home to the states.
Just check Mallaig to Portree on Google. They list Ferry times and bus #.
You will have to take buses around the isle if Skye, but it is doable. Watch out for Sunday, as when we were there on a Sunday several years ago hardly any public transportation was running and not as much was open on the island.
If you take a bus from Oban to Fort William, from there you can ride the famous Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig to catch the ferry.
