Hybrid or Electric car rental for 28 days

Hi. I am just starting to plan a 5-6 week trip to Scotland. Will pick up a car in Inverness July 28th and drop it off in Edinburgh 4 weeks later. Or rent a car for 6 weeks, dropping off in Inverness. Is it feasible to rent an electric like a Tesla Model 3 to explore the Highlands as well as Isle of Skye, and other islands. Unfortunately hybrid or electric car rental has a 90 miles/day included mileage. I am flexible and have no fixed itinerary yet. After dropping off the car, we will have 2 more weeks left to explore Edinburgh and Glasgow. Maybe spend a few days in Edinburgh for the festival.

Any suggestions for a road trip will be appreciated. We want to travel slowly. Thank you. Sorry if I seem totally lost, I am. I have read blogs and used AI for ideas. This is my starting point, renting a car.

No experience in the Highlands, but I would not want to be driving in remote locations with an electric only vehicle. My experience with a hybrid in Germany and France a couple year ago was that only one lodging had a charging station.

Someone from the UK would be better able to tell you about frequency of Tesla charging stations, apps needed to use them, whether they are frequently out of service, and how much time you may need to charge the vehicle. A local might know where the stations are, but using limited vacation time figuring it out might not be the best use of your time.

Personally, I’d find a rental company with unlimited daily mileage and get an internal combustion engine vehicle. Ninety miles a day is nothing,

Thank you for your feedback, that's exactly what my husband said but I wanted to be sure.

if you are just contemplating maybe go to the Edinburgh Fringe you are about 6 months late for hotels. Have you got a plan for the Fringe?

Which company has such a low daily mileage?

Have you looked at the biggies, like Enterprise or Arnold Clark?

You definitely do not want an electric car if coming to Skye. The charging infrastructure here is very poor and there’s almost nothing between Skye and Inverness. We see very few Tesla cars here.

Thanks to all who have replied.
I am using Discover car website and no hybrid or electric cars show up when I click on unlimited mileage for 28 days. Only Keddy and Europcar has EV/hybrid cars with limited mileage.
For a week there are both options.

I am considering the Edinburgh festivals, but will see if any accommodations are available last minute. I am flexible doesn't matter either way.

The charging for EVs is the same here for all models as I can tell, but charging points can still be limited. If you don't want a petrol car a hybrid is really the only way to go though.

if your desire for an EV is based on what you drive at home, you can easily find an automatic transmission petrol car and I am sure somebody can explain how to use a petrol pump and which pump to use. I wouldn't stick to an EV in Scotland as a tourist just because that's the only type you've driven.

Or I may be way off, in which case I apologise.

No apologies needed. I've never driven an ev before. Neither has my husband. We were very impressed by the gas mileage driving a hybrid in Japan, Ireland and the Azores recently.

As someone who has had electric cars for over 8 years now, there really should be no problem these days with renting an electric vehicle. It does need a little bit of planning but is perfectly doable. One key is to understand the charging infrastructure the places where you will be before you set off. In an ideal world you should look for accommodation that either has a charger or is close to other chargers. If you plan to charge overnight as far as you can it will make the whole trip easy as well as probably costing you less than an ICE car. Even if there is no saving you can enjoy a much more pleasurable drive.

The real challenge doing this in Scotland at the height of the season is finding suitable accommodation where you want to be at a price that you can afford with some charging points nearby although of course you won’t need these every day.

I’m surprised to hear that you can’t find EVs with unlimited mileage. It’s never been an issue for me hiring elsewhere in Europe.
