How is Edinburgh Airport to fly into?

In our past trips to the UK, my husband and I have flown into and out of Heathrow. But since our next trip this fall looks like it will start in Edinburgh, and end in London, I'm looking at flying into Edinburgh Airport and out of Heathrow. How is the Edinburgh Airport to fly into from a security/immigration/customs standpoint? Is there a "3-day hike" like at Heathrow to get through the airport and to your transport into the city?

Also. I've read in other forum posts that the tram still isn't up and running yet (downtown streets were a mess due to its' construction when we were there in 2011), but hopefully it will be operational by September. If not, guess we'll bus it to our hotel on the Royal Mile.

Thanks for any info and/or suggestions.

Turnhouse is one of the all-time great ones. With no checked baggage, you're out in the terminal fifteen minutes after the door opens. People who have to pick up junk don't seem to be that far behind. The walk for the jetway is short -- typical of a smaller airport.

One quirk. On the arrivals level (ground floor) there's only Travelex/AmEx booths and machines. Walk t o the far end of the terminal (three whole minutes) and go up the escalator. You'll be facing a wall at the top. Walk around to the other side of that wall toward the Nero coffee place and you'll see a row of bank ATMs.

The buses are at about mid-terminal. It's a hike to the car rental place -- use a luggage free cart if you're headed that way. Good luck on ever seeing the trams.

Nero has the best expresso. Costa's stinks.

Edinburgh airport is so much easier than Heathrow. It's the difference between flying to O'Hare and dealing with all of it's complexities vs flying into Madison's Dane County airport. If you were to ask me what do I miss about Madison WI after moving to NYC, Truax Field would have to be on the list. It's so much easier to fly there than to LaGuardia and let's not even mention JFK! If you can't fly into Edinburgh, the Glasgow airport is also a great airport.

Mary,

I flew into EDI from Dublin and i don't remember anything special or not about it.

It did have a funky tower tho and made a point of taking a picture of it.

happy trails.

I'm in Scotland now. The Edinburgh tram is up and running and goes to the airport. The Air link bus from the airport is good service and cheap, too. The airport itself is a dream to land in, small efficient; same with Glasgow Airport.

Thanks Beth. Which did you use to get into town, the bus or tram?

Mary,

Edinburgh is a smaller airport, so it's much easier to navigate than Heathrow. I don't recall any problems at all in collecting luggage or getting to the Airport Bus. The Tram wasn't yet in operation so I used the AirLink Bus, and it was a very pleasant ride.
