Hey Guys,
I am flying into Edinburgh on May 9th early in the afternoon, staying one night in a hotel and leaving by rental car to go to Isle of Skye the next day...early in the morning (around 6AM) on the 10th of May.
I need a hotel that maybe my wife and I can take the train (or some other public transportation) into Edinburgh from the hotel on the late afternoon and/or evening of the 9th. We plan on looking around the city (maybe see the castle) or whatever. Should I stay at an airport hotel for ease of going back and forth to the city by train? Or is it OK to drive to Edinburgh...parking, traffic and what not?
As far as the car.....should I make car reservations for the 9th or 10th (when I leave early in the morning)? If I rent the car on the 10th, are cars easy to rent that early in the morning? I also need the rental car for the entire week and will turn into London about a week later.
So bottom line is where should I stay and what date should I pick up the car?

We stayed in Just B (B&B) https://www.justbedinburgh.com/ or book through Booking.com. Its about 8 miles from the Airport and a fairly easy drive with GPS without getting into city driving. You can get Bus #44 into Edinburgh. The bus stop is right outside the B&B and buses run frequently taking about 15-20 mins to get into the City Center. Driving into the city center will be a challenge - Even my brother (born and works in the UK) was finding the traffic a little stressful in the City. I would rent the car from the Airport when you arrive. (no point in going back to airport the next day to do this). I know this B&B serves an amazing breakfast starting around 7:00 weekdays and 8:00 weekends. You may feel quite tired at 6:00 AM the following morning to start your drive to the Isle of Skye. Why not have a good breakfast and sleep in a little and set out around 9:00 AM. Its going to be a long days drive to Skye no matter how you do it. You may want to return the car to Edinburgh/Glasgow and take the train or fly to London.

We booked the Premier Inn at the airport for our first 2 nights in Edinburgh due to the high cost of being in Old Town over that weekend. It's close to the airport on the tram line and we'll take the tram in to town.
There are also other hotels near the airport but I wouldn't take a car in to Edinburgh. It's not a city known for it's ease of parking.
