Hotel booking invoice question

I'm planning ahead for a trip to Scotland/Skye for early next October, and in trying to heed the advice about booking early booked three nights in Skye at the Skeabost Hotel.

I booked directly with the hotel and specifically chose a "Book now, pay later" higher refundable rate with free cancellation by a September 2026 date.

Since booking the reservation I received a "payment request" to my email for the full amount with a same-day due date that links to Guestline Paylink. After ignoring it, I received another one today. As this is my first time booking anything boutique in Scotland/UK, I'm wondering if someone could help me understand a few things:

  1. Is this normal for boutique hotels in Scotland? I try to book direct to benefit the hotels rather than a third party, but I can see how this would encourage people to book through one of the aggregators instead.
  2. I don't see any language that would indicate if I don't pay that my reservation will be canceled, but should I assume that I still have a reservation if I wait to pay?
    1. Finally, is there any reason (beyond not wanting to get annoying emails every day) to pay it? I understand that it's refundable, but as the stay is nearly a year away I would prefer to pay at the hotel or at least closer to my date.

Appreciate any guidance or advice for booking on Skye. Thank you!

ETA: The hotel does require your credit card information in order to reserve the room, so I provided that to reserve.

Update! It was human error—someone put the date in for 2025 rather than 2026 to the invoicing system, so it was sending as if they were overdue. It has now been corrected and payment will be made from the credit card on file 21 days prior to the stay (per the cancellation policy).

I've done that before and even though I'm not paying until later, many times the hotel will ask for credit card information that they keep on hold just in case. After all, if you don't show up and you don't cancel in time, then they have no easy way of getting payment.

So it is common but to put your mind at ease, I would suggest contacting the hotel to ask about it. I would also ask for a copy of their cancellation policy. Here is a link to their contact page: https://sonascollection.com/our-hotels/skeabost/contact/

The hotel uses guestline as it's host for direct bookings, so in terms of whether it looks to be a genuine e-mail, yes it would seem to be.
But it is certainly reasonable and normal that the hotel needs your credit card details and to know that they have a line of credit for the full amount due to protect themselves in case you either do turn up and don't/can't pay, or you cancel less than the 7 days beforehand, or are a no show.

Apologies for not including this in the original post, but credit card information is required to make any reservation, so they already have that on file, which was part of my confusion for the invoice request :)

And I know that I can contact the hotel, but asked because if this is a common issue with hotel systems in the UK/Scotland it is helpful to know whether this is a one-off or simply part of this hotel's systems.

It could be any of those. I have gotten requests like that from a hotel and they may run it through just to make sure the credit card is valid. But again, the only person that will really know is someone from the hotel, so I would really contact them.

Is it common in the UK/Scotland? No. But it depends on the hotel.

The request for an immediate payment, when you selected the higher "pay later" price, and they have your credit card details as a guarantee, seems odd, or an error.
I would contact the hotel direct and ask.

I suppose if you make a “pay later” reservation on Monday and get a bill on Tuesday, in the strictly literal sense that is “later”, but not one’s normal understanding of what that means …

Will leave this here in case anyone gets value from it. I rarely post online but so appreciate information I glean from others.

Thanks so much for circling back with the response you got from the hotel. Glad to know it was a human error and has been corrected!

And yes, do leave your post up in case others are searching for the same topic in the future.

Have a great time!
