Edinburgh has cancelled most (all?) of the outdoor events for Hogmanay this year due to weather warnings. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgm9d7v1jvlo
Weather is pretty wild at the moment and due to get a lot worse,it has been many years since I was in the city center for Hogmanay and the last time I was there things got cancelled at the last minute. That was not a great experience for me and friends from various parts of the city ,with early cancellation at least local folk can re organise things and visitors can try and make the best of the situation. Not great but better cancelling early than last minute.
That must have been a difficult decision to make, but I'm sure it's the safest one. Hopefully the weather next year will be better.
8.00am here in south east Edinburgh, still very dark , really heavy rain and strong wind . I won't be going anywhere today not even to to recycling bins 20 meters from my back door. weather is suppose to calm down later today. the main reason for the cancellation of the outdoor events has not what the weather will be at around midnight but the terrible weather in the run up that has not allowed the building of stages or putting crowd control and access barriers/ gates in place.
stay safe folks.
south of the border Blackpool's cancelled too.
High wind, fireworks, what could possibly go wrong?
The fireworks at Newcastle on Tyne are also cancelled.
Meanwhile in Scotland there are power outages in the Highlands, and a number of rail and road routes closed by flooding and/or landslides, as well as many ferry routes cancelled.
