Hello - we are going to be in Scotland in August so trying to get to as many of the festivals and special events as possible. We have our tickets for Edinburg Tatoo and Fringe. We also got tickets for the Perth Highland Games - we have 2 teenagers so thought these Olympic type festival might be fun. Has anybody been to this or any other Highland Games - not sure what to expect but it looks like it will be fun?
In my experience there will be lots of hairy people throwing heavy things and lots of other hairy people watching and drinking, to the bemusement of the many North Americans in the audience. So, all good fun.
BTW it’s Edinburgh with an h. My Edinburgh friends tell me the correct pronunciation is a little like “Embraa” but they sometimes tell lies. It definitely does not rhyme with Pittsburgh.
I went to Gourock games last year. And they had a segment where they allowed the spectators to try some of the sports out- and there were North Americans there who they managed to identify as such and specifically got them involved.
You will find the games enormous fun. There is also Scottish Dancing and lots of bagpipes. It is a superb day out. I'll bet you'll end up later at one of the North American Highland Games, at a later date. They are all over the States wherever there is or was a significant Scottish disapora.
Attended the final Highland Games of 2023 at Nairn. What a great time! It's like a track and field meet, dance competition, concert and parade wrapped up in one. Plenty of beer, too.
