Highland Games: Mother/Daughter UK Road Trip

OK, my daughter and I are spending the summer backpacking/road tripping thru Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Has anybody ever been to the Highland Games?

I was hoping somebody could give me personal intel on which is better.

There are two that run during the time we will be there:

Braemar Gathering is in Aberdeenshire, near Aberdeen, on 9/6/2014 (http://www.braemargathering.org/)

and

Lanoch Highland Gathering is in Bellabeg, Strathdon, also near Aberdeen, on 8/23/2014 (http://www.lonach.org/)

Thank you so much for your experiences.

The Braemar Gathering is the big one. It's the one that the Queen often attends. It's the biggie. The Lonoch Highland Gathering is on a Saturday. Interesting Lonach has a formal Scottish Ball, note evening attire is required. : ) I've been to one in Madison, WI and you really do need to know how to do Scottish Country Dance. The dances are all chosen in advance and unlike American Contra Dancing, there is no caller. The steps are memorized. If by any chance your are Scottish Country Dancers, you can usually get the dance list in advance so you can practice.

Braemar is huge, I suspect that Lonach is smaller. Just look at the array of pipe bands that played last year at Braemar.

I believe that the OP had a typo.

The Lonoch games are always on the 4th Saturday in August. In 2014 that is the 23rd.

No personal experience to add regarding the games. Happy planning!
