Help with Travel Itinerary in off season

First time traveling to Scotland and needing help as worried about off season and general itinerary. We are headed as a larger group of 9 people to Scotland for a week in mid-March.

It’s a diverse group of interests so trying to plan a combination of city vs nature. Most of the group prefers to have more of a homebase and get to know the area we are staying more deeply with the limited time. Don’t want to jump around every few days but we do plan on doing day trips (some guided) out of the cities. We have two nieces who this will be their first international trip and it’s a gift to them. They like the idea of seeing two different areas/places when choosing which cities to base out of like one city and one countryside or seaside. We know we can’t see it all especially with that idea.

We fly in and out of Edinburgh and would prefer to rely on public transport.

First itinerary thought:
- arrive and travel straight to Oban
-2-3 nights Oban (1 day isle of Mull/Iona, another isle visit again or explore the area with a distillery visit)
- Return to Edinburgh
- Rest of trip in Ediburgh with day trips (Glasgow/Sterling/etc)

Main questions:
- do people recommend Oban in March? We don’t like the idea of trying to get to Skye just due to the amount of time traveling so we thought this would give us a taste of what the isles are like.
- Will we be able to do Oban if it’s March without a car?
- Are there local tours to hire from there for isle tours?
(Considered Glencoe/Fort William but had similar hesitation with March timeframe & no car)
- another itinerary option was to base purely out of Edinburgh with guide tour(s) to see highlands but felt like they would enjoy staying and experiences two different places.

Thanks for the help!

May I suggest you take a look at the tours offered by Rabbies.

While it is off season for most of their tours, with a group of 9 they could put together some "customized" tours for you.

They utilize 16 passenger vans so you won't feel out of place as you might on a large bus. Since it would be your own van and own schedule, you could do more than if you relied on trains and buses. Plus...you get a driver/guide.

The train and bus services to Oban and locally in the Oban area are basically the same in March as they are in peak season, as they are primarily for the local population.
The only exception to that is the seasonal daily long distance bus to Edinburgh.

Also, as the West Coast Tours website says, you can still explore the Isle of Mull and Iona as their parent company, West Coast Motors, also operate the island scheduled bus services, which are year round.

From Oban you also have Kerrera, Lismore, the Slate Islands, Tiree and Coll to explore. It isn't cheap but the most exciting way to see Tiree and Coll is to ferry one way and to fly the other from Oban airport The flights are Public Service Obligation flights, and also transport School Children who board in Oban during the week, but they are also wonderful sightseeing opportunities.
With 8 people you would almost fill the plane, they may even put on an extra flight for such a large group.

Another option for 2 or 3 days would be the Isle of Islay- fly in and out from Glasgow on Loganair (or Citylink run buses from Glasgow which connect with all ferry sailings from Kennacraig).
Plenty of distilleries on Islay, a perfectly useable island bus service, and several of the island taxi companies do bespoke tours.
