We are fortunate to have stops in these three places on our cruise in Sept. Of course time is limited at each stop but we do like do both countryside and city explorations, not meaning to do
both at each stop. This is an exploratory cruise, we are hoping to return to Scotland to explore more of the country in the upcoming years. Our interests include architecture, history, people and pubs.
My question is, of the three, which would be recommended to explore city vs. countryside. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.
Hello. If you really like architecture, then definitely Glasgow and Edinburgh (note spellings on these 2 cities) - stay in town. Not sure how much time you will have, but even a walk down the Edinburgh Royal Mile would give you a taste of the "old city". If you have time, see Edinburgh Castle. Or, as I would imagine, your cruise ship will dock in Port Leith, you will not be far from the Royal Yacht Britannia, so you could tour the yacht if that is your thing. Glasgow is a great stop for architecture too, albeit quite different from Edinburgh. So, stay in the cities in this case too. Invergordon offers many more choices dependent on the time you have available. You could pick up a tour to Culloden Battlefield (history), tour Dunrobin or Cawdor Castles (history/people/architecture), or tour down to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle (monster hunting!?). I'm sure your cruise ship will offer trips like this. For more options, Google "top ten things to do in Glasgow", etc. Enjoy your trip!
