Help understand unpredictable weather- Oct in Highlands

Hi all

Some follow up questions from my earlier posts re Highlands Itinerary for 1st week of October. I need to make a decision between 2 options for a 5 day trip around the highlands - 1) Oban & surrounding areas + Isles & 2) up north in the Applecross + Torridon region.

A lot of you have mentioned & I have also read that October can have unpredictable weather in the Highlands. I just wanted to understand what generally unpredictable entails- rain, wind, flooding, snow or something else? How long does such weather usually last? Does such weather make it impossible to drive/move about for longer periods?

I absolutely understand no one can predict any kind of specific weather but just wanted to know what could be that unpredictable weather & what to expect in each of the areas when there is such weather.

Thank you!

Unpredictable means unpredictable. I don’t mean to be smart alecky, it means that the climate is so changeable all over the UK that it’s pointless trying to predict it this far out. And in the Highlands is particularly unpredictable even within a day. I mean, it’s constantly unpredictable. So a day could start out mild and sunny but later turn wet or windy or foggy.

It probably won’t be extreme. October tends to run the gamut from pleasant and sunny to wet and windy. And snow is unlikely.

The best advice is to check previous Octobers for a sense of the temperature range, then use a reliable forecast daily such as Met Office or BBC - but also don’t assume that if the day starts sunny then it will end that way. Weather moves quickly in the Uk and particularly in the Highlands.

We’re not using “unpredictable” as code for “tornadoes likely” or “huge weather events on the way.” Just: bring layers, some warm, some waterproof, and understand that it can change quickly.

@Golden Girl- Thank you so much for this clarification & the advice. This is the kind of feedback I wanted to get a sense on things. Unpredictable can mean so much & differently around the world so this is good information. I do appreciate your honesty & I am of course not trying to expecting anyone to speculate or predict weather.

Changeable is possibly a better word than unpredictable - plan for rain. prepare for cold, try to cover most non extreme situations. It can also, especially high up, change very quickly.

Moving around shouldn't be an issue in October but it might not be pleasant on foot

The UK is generally changeable and the more you involve stretches of water and mountains, the more that becomes a factor

In June of 2022, we had 80F and sunny for three days in a row (for Oban and Lunga/Staffa) then two days later, we had soaking winds on Skye followed by drier gales (70mph+) on the Trotternish for two days. We couldn't physically walk on the Quiraing. Then it was nice and sunny for two weeks. The MET forecasts were only good for a day or two in advance. And that was June!

As an example , on a past sojourn in The Highlands we drove from Culloden to Grantown on Spey The weather was not at all conducive to wandering around in the town , what with a heavy rain and a leaden sky . We stopped in at a cafe for some coffee and refreshment , and within an hour , the sky had cleared , the rain ceased ,and the town was bathed in a beautiful Autumn sunlight . With the rain glistening on the orange leaves , I was able to take some of the best photos I've ever had
