Heading to the islands--can I rent a car in Mallaig or Kyle of Lochalsh?

Hi all,

I have been to Scotland many times and always rent a car in one of the cities and then drive. This time I would like to take the train to either Mallaig or Kyle of Lochalsh and pick up a car there before heading to Skye and then out to some of the Western Isles. I am trying to avoid the long drive so I can really enjoy the scenery this time.
So my question is about when and where to rent a car. Is it possible at those train stations along the West Coast? Or is it even possible out on the islands?

Here's a link to the visitscotland site for care hires. You can easily rent something in Kyle of Lochalsh or on Skye to drive in those areas. The trick will be finding one that will let you drop if off some place else.

I've rented a car in Glasgow and driven up the west coast visiting islands etc. and had no trouble. I've had no trouble renting in Inverness and dropping off in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Good luck. Hopefully someone will have had experience with what you want to do.
