My husband and I are going to be in Scotland and England this summer. We have found a rental car agency in Scotland and England, Arnold Clarke. We are wondering if anyone else has rented a car through this company and what was their experience.
I recall that one of the posters here by the name of Cyn , from Colorado , had mentioned a year or so ago that she had rented from this company - try a PM to her
I live in Edinburgh and use Arnold clark all the time for my car rentals anything up to 6 times a year.Excellent company, all good cars , service is high quality and on the one occasion I had any problems it was deal with quickly and efficiently, the are probably the top independent car rental company in Scotland.
I rented with their office in Inverness a couple years ago. I found them to be very friendly and efficient. They were patient with explaining things to me when I picked up the car (I'd never driven on the left before) and gave some handy advice. They were also kind when I dropped the car off and gave me a ride back to the train station for free. Also, when I made the booking there was a slight error that charged me for airport pickup instead of city pickup, an extra 8 pounds. I emailed and asked about this and got a prompt reply apologizing for the mistake and saying they would credit me the 8 pounds when I picked up the car, which they did. I had printed the email just to be safe, but they handled it for me. Would definitely use them again if I were ever back in Inverness.
Here are some of Cyn's posts where she refers to her Arnold Clark rental:

Arnold Clarke worked out just fine for our car rental. The B&B owner in Fort William had mentioned he'd had a problem with them when he bought a car one time, and would never do business with them again, but we didn't discuss any details. The return at the Edinburgh airport couldn't have been easier. The pick-up in Inverness, on a very rainy day could have been smother. They were supposed to pick us up at the Inverness airport and transport us to their office in town to rent out the car. We waited for some time, and had to call them once or twice to ensure they knew we were still waiting for their shuttle. Then once we got to their office, it took a long time, but we've experienced that with Hertz in Lisbon, so that was't necessarily a unique situation. The car was in good shape, though, and the price was right, so were were satisfied with Arnold Clarke car rental.
Cyn, I can understand your B&B owner. Arnold Clark has a not brilliant reputation in their dealership side, which is where most people here will face them. They have a strong nickname that indicates peoples' feelings. But it does sound the rental side is OK.
MC, I'll bet that's a witty, biting nickname. Too bad, it would not seem wise to alienate local, full-time Scots - there are a lot more of you in Scotland than us temporary tourists.
It is certainly 'biting'!
