half day tour of Glencoe area from Fort William or Oban

I'd love to do a Rabbies tour from Edinbourgh to Glencoe, Loch Ness, etc., but I'm not sure my 89 mother can handle a 12 hour day. I was hoping to find a half day tour from Fort William or Orban. I have been told there are lots lovely turnouts in the Glencoe area, so I'd be looking to somehow do the drive leisurely and making short stops along the way. Probably also, a stop or two for snacks/toilet.

I could do the CityLink bus from Fort William to Glencoe and back, but I'm sure they don't do photo stops or slight detours for views.

I've looked at the RS guidebook hoping the Fort William or Orban would have some guides listed, I've also searched the internet. Mostly what I find are tours designed and priced for groups.

I think I will see if Fort William, Glencoe or Orban has a tourist office that might have suggestions. The other idea would be to rent a car for a few hours, if that is even possible from those small cities.` Or maybe someone on the forum has some ideas?

Is it your Mom that really wants to see Glencoe? I can think of other places that I personally enjoyed more. Glencoe is lovely but seems to appeal to hikers, etc. And, it is sometimes, Misty... they say it is the ghosts of the MacDonald Clan crying. We spent an Hour there and drove on to Loch Ness which takes quite a while to get to Urquhart. We really enjoyed Inverarary Castle, Clan Campbell, Duke of Argyle,it is in that part of the country with many choices of accomadations near by that is near a Loch and National Park. The Castles Interior and Grounds are quite outstanding. We were driving, so that would be the best choice, if you really want to see what you want and Glencoe. Oban is worth going to if you are planning to catch a ferry to the Islands, you catch buses that connect between ferries and the next island. You can drive to Syke from Fort William. I think that is harder to get off and on Buses. Check out www.visitscotland.com.

Thank you, Kathleen. We will be staying in both Oban and Fort Williams. I'm trying to find places for my mother to experience the Scotland highlands without a lot of physical effort. I've been told by quite a few people that the Glencoe area is stunning. My son and his wife spent some time in the area and said there is a really nice drive with lots of pull offs. (They were some of the many that discouraged me from going to Skye since she wouldn't be able to do much walking ) If I could rent a car for a day, I think I would do it. But so far no cars in those two cities that I can find. My husband and I have driven all over Europe, New Zealand and Australia, but he always drives and I navigate. So I have no experience behind the wheel "on the wrong side", plus my mother would not be able to navigate plus, I'd be attending to whatever needs she has. For the rest of the trip we'll be in Edinburgh using public transportation.

Jules, I think there are so many stunning and beautiful places to visit in Scotland that many people never bother to see because they hear the same places mentioned over and over, including Skye and Glencoe Valley.

Your train from Glasgow to Ft William on the West Highland Line will be spectacular as will your ride to Mallaig. Whether you take the bus or the train to Oban there will be beautiful scenery. Your day trip to Mull and Iona will be lovely.

We took friends with us on our last Scotland trip and they were amazed at the beauty even though we didn't drive through Glencoe.

If you're up for driving there are a couple car rentals in Oban and Ft. William.

In Oban: Flit Self Drive. Typical of small towns, it is repair shop that also rents cars.

In Ft. William: Ft. William Car Hire and Easy Drive Scotland.

Here is a tour company based about 10 minutes outside of Oban that offers private day tours. Maybe you could book a half day tour.

Argyll Safaris

Your giving your Mother a wonderful gift - time with her daughter in a beautiful country. Don't torture yourself over everything. You will both have a wonderful time.
