Glencoe

Is sidestepping to Glencoe on the way to Skye feasible? I'm thinking not, given I plan to use the bridge. Just trying to get the most scenery from Inverness to Skye. I do have a rental car.

It would help to have more info. So are you going from Inverness to Skye? You could certainly head to Glencoe, and then take the ferry from Mallaig to Skye. A lot depends on how much time you have. The ferries are pretty easy even with a rental car, so it just depends on how much you want to see Glencoe.

We drove the West Highland Way coming from Edinburgh to Skye and stopped briefly at Glencoe to get off the road and walk into the valley a bit. Not a long stop but beautiful and evocative. From Skye we headed over to Loch Ness/Inverness.

What is your next destination AFTER Skye? When you leave Skye, you can take the CalMac ferry from Armadale to Mallaig. Then drive to Glen Coe. If you can fit in Glen Coe, it's definitely worth it. We loved every place we visited in Scotland last June; however, Glen Coe and Skye were our favorites for spectacular, stunning, and green scenery.

I really have a whole day. I'm not in any particular hurry and since there will be lots of daylight hours in May, I don't feel there is a particular deadline.

I just want to see the best scenery, but don't want to run afoul of car rental rules. Renting with Celtic/Arnold Clarke.

I will be staying a night in Fort Augustus and have a 10:30am flight out of Inverness to London after Skye.

On our trip, we took the bridge over to Skye from Inverness, but coming back to the mainland (and Glen Coe!) we took the quick, tiny ferry from Kylerhea to Glenelg. You could do it in reverse. That ferry doesn’t run year-round, so you’d want to verify dates and times.

We used Arnold Clark, too, and the rental worked very well.
